Some Properties of Area Functionals in Numerical Grid Generation

چکیده
In this paper we present some general properties concerning area functionals, both continuous and discrete, used in the variational approach of numerical grid generation. In particular we introduce a new proof of a theorem concerning the classical area functional which has served us as a guide in the design of new area functionals yielding better performance than the currently used. In particular these new functionals produce grids with a better control in the areas of the cells.

Smooth and Convex Grid Generation over General Plane Regions
A new method to produce convex and smooth grids over general plane regions is introduced. This method belongs to the discrete variational grid generation approach. Theoretical results presented guarantee that a convex grid over a region is obtained when this method is applied; the basic assumption is that at least one convex grid exists. A procedure to control large cells, in addition to smooth...
متن کاملGrid Generation and Adaptation by Functionals
Abstract : Accuracy of a simulation is strongly depend on the grid quality. Here, quality means orthogonality at the boundaries and quasi-orthogonality within the critical regions, smoothness, bounded aspect ratios, solution adaptive behaviour, etc. We review various functionals for generating high quality structured quadrilateral meshes in two dimensional domains. Analysis of Winslow and Modif...
متن کاملQuadtree and Octree Grid Generation
Engineering analysis often involves the accurate numerical solution of boundary value problems in discrete form. Hierarchical quadtree (or octree) grid generation offers an efficient method for the spatial discretisation of arbitrary-shaped two- (or three-) dimensional domains. It consists of recursive algebraic splitting of sub-domains into quadrants (or cubes), leading to an ordered hierarchi...
متن کاملOn the Provably Tight Approximation of Optimal Meshing for Non-convex Regions
Automatic generation of smooth, non-overlapping meshes on arbitrary regions is the well-known problem. Considered as optimization task the problem may be reduced to finding a minimizer of the weighted combination of so-called length, area, and orthogonality functionals. Unfortunately, it has been shown that on the one hand, certain weights of the individual functionals do not admit the unique o...
متن کامل9 Surface Grid Generation Systems
Structured surface grid generation entails the generation of a curvilinear coordinate grid on a surface. It may be necessary to generate such a grid in order to perform a two-dimensional numerical simulation of a physical process involving the surface. Alternately, surface grid generation may represent a stage in the generation of a volume grid, which itself would be used in a three-dimensional...
